Mission Alphabetica

Like many of you, I love music. I really, really love music.

Over the years, I have gathered much of my favorite genres of music: classic rock and hard rock/metal, often with a progressive twist. Add to that my 80s pop obsession and smattering of other things … and I find that my iPods and 1000+ CD rack are quite full. And I feel like looking through it all today.

So let’s play a game.

For each letter of the alphabet, I will give you the artist with the most CDs in my collection—which will almost always be a classic rock or hard rock/metal artist.

Then I list the artist that I’d choose from that letter if I could only keep the music of one artist per letter. (If the most frequent artist already is my favorite, I choose my next favorite from that letter.)

Finally, I’ll give you one of the artists I have from that letter that stands out as the greatest contrast from the first one. Maybe it’ll be cheesy 80s pop, perhaps something entirely different.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, involves two things:

(1) Tell me the letters for which you’d choose my unusual, contrasting pick instead of my most common or my favorite one.

(2) Tell me which letter you’d choose if you could only have the artists of ONE LETTER on your iPod. For example, I’d probably choose G—I’d enjoy the variety of Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Godsmack, Gordian Knot, Great White, GTR, the Guess Who, and Guns N’ Roses, among others.

Here goes! (Reminder: The first artist listed is the “most represented,” the second is my favorite if the first isn’t, and the third is my “quirky” CD pick.)

A: AC/DC; Aerosmith; Afro Celt Sound System

B: The Beatles; Black Sabbath; Bell Biv Devoe

C: Phil Collins; Collective Soul; Chemical Brothers

D: The Doors; Dream Theater; Terence Trent D’Arby

E: Emerson, Lake & Palmer; ELO; Everlast

F: Finger Eleven; Fates Warning; Frankie Goes to Hollywood

G: Genesis; Peter Gabriel; Laurent Garnier

H: Steve Hackett; Heart; Harvey Danger

I: Iron Maiden; INXS; Information Society

J: Judas Priest; Journey; Stanley Jordan

K: KISS; King Crimson; Kruder & Dorfmeister

L: Led Zeppelin; John Lennon; Little River Band

M: Dave Matthews Band; Metallica; Wynton Marsalis

N: Nine Inch Nails; Night Ranger; N.W.A.

O: Ozzy Osbourne; The Outfield; Outkast

P: Prince; The Police; Michael Penn

Q: Queensryche; Queens of the Stone Age; Queen

R: Rush; Ratt; Rusted Root

S: Sting; Stone Temple Pilots; Seafood

T: Tesla; Tool; Andy Taylor

U: U2; Uriah Heep; US3

V: Van Halen; Velvet Revolver; Vangelis

W: Whitesnake; The Who; Stevie Wonder

X: --

Bel biv devoe freaking rocks

Although I didn't like the other artists.

I'd choose P cuz you can't go wrong with Price and the Police, although I have never heard of that other guy. Where the hell is the country representation?

This comment is brought to you by the letter "W."

This is fun, like Sesame Street or something ;-)

You must be thin on "Z" cd's because Zebra are not that quirky.

OMG! I got confused reading the directions. Maybe it's because I had such a long day at work and I can barely function. OR maybe it's the peanut butter and jelly sandwich / beer combo I had for dinner tonight. I'm not entirely sure. But yeah...

Oh, and I am seriously laughing that you own a ton of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Hehehe. NICE! :-)

A: Air Supply; Frankie Avalon; Alvin & the Chipmunks; Abba; Clay Aiken; Allen Sherman; The Archies; Al Yankovic, "Weird"; Argent; Asia; AC/DC; Aretha Franklin; Atlantic Starr; The Astronauts.

In fact, henceforth, I will only listen to music by people whose names start with "A."

Music? Is that still around?

Whatever happened to the telepathic receivers they promised us back in the '50s?

Mike: X is my weak spot. I've heard some X and XTC, but didn't like either enough to buy any.

Jenna: "Posion" is one of the catchiest songs of the past 20 years. But trust me--don't buy the album. So not worth it.

Paige: I like M, too. I captures some of my favorite metal acts (Metallica, Metal Church, Mastodon, Motley Crue), pop (Dave Matthews Band, Moody Blues, Moby) and other fun music (Massive Attack, Men at Work, Muse, Midnight Oil, etc.).

Phats: I thought you chose P for Purdue! And country has no place on this or any list of mine--along with opera, it's a genre I just won't listen to.

Lisa: Maybe that whole Sesame Street thing is why it appealed to me.

Mark: Z is one of the thinner ones, naturally. I don't own any Zombies, so Zebra was it.

Leah: ELP has its place in my collection, but I don't listen to it all that much.

ZW: Al Yankovic would be a good addition to the Y section. I believe the fact that you mentioned Clay Aiken invalidates your Blogger account for at least a week.

Gyrobo: I'm waiting for the iPod iMplant--a small hard drive attached to your frontal lube that you can activate with only a thought.

Lee Ann: Nice list! You really need some old Peter Gabriel albums to fill out your collection.

GN: What a great idea! Maybe I'll do favorite movies or books by letter next. I feel so alphabetical lately.

PQ: I could have used my Evanescence CDs to justify listing them as my third artist for E, but I thought Everlast was a greater contrast. Eminem was a close second.

1. I'm going with Frankie Goes to Hollywood! Relax is a great song.

2. In my own collection, I'd have to go with "S". (Scorpions, Skid Row, Soul Asylum, Soundgarden,Spin Doctors, Steely Dan, Steve Miller Band (or are they in "M"?), STP, System of a Down.

1) While I really like NIN I might actually like NWA more. "Straight Outta Compton" is a classic.

2)This is just too tough but I think I might go with R because of Rage Against the Machine, REM, Radiohead, The Ramones, Roger Waters Rush, The Raconteurs, and The Rolling Stones

That's way to hard for me to pick!! I can't pick, I just can't pick!! I can't, I can't, I can't.

Come on country music is awesome!!

a little george strait, garth brooks, dixie chicks, i promise you'd be singing a different tune!

Your collection is extensive. But...what is Bel Biv Devoe???
I'd have to go with "G" cuz Godsmack rocks!!!

At March 21, 2007 5:56 AM, Blogger David Amulet replied to my musings ...

Mike: S is a damn good choice, too. I always alphabetize artists by last name, including bands with a member name in the title ("Steve Miller Band"). Bands named after someone, though, are by first name--like Jethro Tull. I think stores tend to do it that way, too.

Cube: Ever heard that stuff in the elevator? Music is like that, only better.

Fuzz: You've got one on me. I suppose I could have cheated and put King's X there, but that's weak.

Jeff: New NIN next month. I don't think we'll see new N.W.A., however. I thought you'd choose L for Johnny, but I see why you like R.

Angel: A refusal to pick brings 40 lashes.

Phats: I wouldn't be singing a different tune ... I'd be wretching.

Hey, this is so much easier with iTunes menus. A note of interest is that I was helping a friend digitize his music. Much to his chagrin, we learned he had no less then 8 versions of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".

The top letter would have to be "B" which brings not just The Beatles and Beach Boys but Berlin and Blondie, not to leave out Björk, Bowie, David Byrne, Black Sabbath, Jorge Ben, Kate Bush, Lindsey Buckingham, Maria Bethânia, Tony Bennit, Jeff Beck, The B-52's, and Joe Brown.

At March 21, 2007 5:45 PM, Blogger Martin replied to my musings ...

Yes, I think I'm shocked that you are missing X acts in your collection. I mean there are X, XTC, Xymox, XYZ (for your Metal collection) and X-Mal Deutschland. Good stuff. But, I have to tell you that I'm impressed you have US3 in the collection.

At March 21, 2007 7:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous replied to my musings ...

M: I'd go with Wynton Marsalis over Dave Matthews since I can't stomach his music. Heck, I might even take Wynton over Metallica at this point in their career.

I would probably go with G as well with all of that good Genesis and Gabriel!

So...are you doing the Genesis reunion tour? I'm sitting out until they get Gabriel onboard.

At March 21, 2007 8:11 PM, Blogger David Amulet replied to my musings ...

DaBich: Bell Biv Devoe was one of the many post-New Edition artists to hit the charts; BBD's big hit was "Posion." They were the polar musical opposite of Godsmack--when I put the two CDs down next to each other, they actually repel each other, like magnets, across the floor.

GW: It is easier with iTunes, although I don't like the way iTunes alphabetizes many artists by first name. And I just don't feel like editing all the names to be in the order of "Amulet, David."

80s Nut: Some of the others I've heard and decided not to buy, but XYZ is a band I've never heard. To fill out my alphabetical list, I may just need to check that out.

FC: Some days, I prefer Mellencamp, Massive Attack, or Mozart to any of those. As for Genesis, I spurn them. I say the last tour and was underimpressed, depsite the "long medley." I really don't want to see Genesis live without its heart and soul: Gabriel and Hackett, respectively.
